Background and aim: In recent years, Brain-Machine Interface (BMI),which is a direct communication pathway between the brain and anexternal device, has been expected as a method to control electricalappliances without using hands or any other body parts. However, sincemost of past experiments were only held in restrictive conditions, it isnecessary to develop a BMI system which can perform well even if subjectare in a natural daily environment. On the other hands, previous ERPstudies showed that, during a oddball paradigm, a large positive ERPcomponent, the P300, arose more than 300ms after the onset of theattended beep. We considered that the auditory P300 would be useful fordaily BMI, because people often attend to the appliances when they wantto use them. We also expected that reducing distractions caused by theenvironment would improve the BMI performance.
Method: We conducted the experiment with an oddball paradigm in theexperimental facility which imitated the actual living environment. Inthe experiment we presented three kinds of beep stimuli, subjects wereinstructed to attend and count the target stimulus. We classifiedaveraged P300 with Liner Discriminant Analysis. In addition, weimplemented the noise discarding system to avoid attention distraction.
Results: There were significant differences between target ERP data andnon-target ERP data. Furthermore, the classification performance wasimproved by using the noise discarding system.
Conclusion: Through our research, we confirmed the usefulness ofauditory ERP-basedBMI in the daily environment.
